Alfred William “Bebo” Flynn was born in Sumter, South Carolina on September 24, 1938, and was welcomed into the world by his parents, Francis Edward Flynn and Irene Stack Flynn, and an older brother, Francis Clarence Flynn. Before moving to Williston during the Thanksgiving of 1951, Bebo lived in approximately 14 cities, including Childersburg, Alabama, Oakridge, Tennessee, and various towns across the state of South Carolina, ranging from Charleston to Camden to Greenville. After the death of his mother in 1953, Annie Laurie Hair welcomed Bebo into her home, and he remained there until he was married.
Bebo graduated from Williston-Elko High School in June of 1957 and worked for A.N. Garber Cotton Company the summer after graduation. Soon after, he joined the South Carolina Air National Guard and went to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas for basic training in 1958. He served a 1-year tour of duty at Chaumont Air Force Base in Chaumont, France, and gained the rank of staff sergeant.
On November 26, 1960, Bebo married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Boyles Flynn. He eventually had two daughters, Kia Ann Flynn (Scott) Valentine and Kelly Stack Flynn, who blessed him with five grandchildren, Mary Scott Valentine, Anna Fletcher Valentine, Flynn Victoria Valentine, Zachary Payne Neville and Tucker Yale Neville, and one great-grandchild, Eli Stack Roberts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelly Stack Flynn.
In 1972, Bebo purchased A.N. Garber Cotton Company, which then became Flynn Cotton Company. He was also associated with Quincy Kennedy and the ownership of Williston Cotton Gin. Throughout his life, Bebo has played a part in various other business endeavors, including a partnership with Rudy Starnes and Wendell Lee in the ownership of Village Squire, Grapevine and Leader Clothing Stores, and an approximately 40-year partnership with Pete Grady in the ownership and management of Shamrock Realty.
Bebo’s civic involvement includes involvement in the Williston Jaycees Chapter during the early 1960s, where he served as president and was a recipient of the JCI Senator Award. He was also a past member of the Williston Lion’s Club and the 1984 recipient of Williston’s Citizen of the Year Award. Bebo is a stockholder and original charter member of the Williston Country Club, where he served on the board of directors and as president for many years. He is also a stockholder and member of the board of directors for the Williston Development Corporation. He has been a member of the Williston Presbyterian Church for 64 years where he has served as deacon, elder and treasurer.
Bebo’s political career began in the early 1960s when he was elected to the Williston Town Council. There, he served 20 years, including time as councilman mayor pro tem, and his last eight years as mayor of the town of Williston. In 1984, Bebo was appointed as Barnwell County magistrate and was subsequently appointed as Williston Municipal Judge and Barnwell County Chief Magistrate. He was a member of the National Summary Court Judges Association and is a life member of the South Carolina Summary Court Judges Association. Bebo served 28 years until his retirement in December 2010. Since retirement, Bebo and his wife split their time between their homes in Williston, South Carolina and Edisto Island, South Carolina, where he enjoys fishing, traveling and spending time with his grandkids and great-grandson.
Bebo owes his success to numerous people in Williston, including W.A. and Inez Boyne, and their son, Billy, Annie Laurie Hair, members and pastors of Williston Presbyterian Church, teachers and coaches at Williston-Elko High School, including his mentor, Joe Kelly, and his high school friends from the classes of 1957 and 1958.
