Nora Brabham Riley (Barnwell)

Nora Brabham Riley, 95, of Barnwell, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 16, 2017 in the John Edward Harter Nursing Home in Fairfax.

Mrs. Riley was born in Allendale County on June 30, 1919 and was a daughter of the late Hallie Benjamin and Elizabeth Ferguson Brabham. She was the widow of John W. “Billy” Riley. Mrs. Nora was a retired store manager for Barnwell Factory Outlet, a member of Barnwell First Baptist Church and Harmony Hope Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 in the Mole Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. with Rev. Gene Long officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnwell Co. Memorial Cemetery at the airport. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Survivors include her daughter, Elaine (Dave) Hiers of Allendale; grandchildren, Jennifer (Tommy) Pinckney and Michael (Annah) Hiers; great-grandchildren, Tommy and Auri Pinckeny; sisters, Verna (Julian) Proctor of Warrenville and Shirley B. Johnson of Augusta, Ga. She was also predeceased by a son, Pat Riley; grandson, Brad Riley, and great-granddaughter, Caitlin Elaine Pinckney.

Jason Schumpert (Elko)

Funeral services for Jason Allen Schumpert, 43, of Elko, will be held at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, December 17, 2017 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Tom Baker officiating; burial will be in the Williston Cemetery. Jason passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2017.

Born in Aiken, he was the son of Jessie Martin “Marty” Schumpert and Linda Allen Schumpert. Jason was a graduate of Williston-Elko High School, was owner/operator of Schumpert’s Horseshoeing, and was a certified welder and a blacksmith. He was a member of the Farrier Association, a charter member of the Barnwell County Leathernecks detachment #1227 of the Marine Corps League and the Elko Fire Department. He was a U.S. Marine veteran having served during Desert Storm and was previously stationed in Okinawa, Japan. During his time in the Marines he earned and was honored with many medals and ribbons for his achievements and accomplishments.

In addition to his parents, Marty and Linda, survivors include his son, Ty Schumpert; his daughters, Audra Schumpert and Jackie Edwards; their mother, Sharon Schumpert; his sister and brother-in-law, Rhonda and Michael Allen; nephews, Hunter and Wyatt Allen; maternal grandmother, Barbara Allen and a number of cousins, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, David Allen and his paternal grandparents, Elma and Ralph Schumpert.

Bebeta passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2017.

Born in Barnwell County, she was a daughter of the late Milage Duncan Martin and Meredith Collins Martin. She was a member of Denmark First Baptist Church, previously worked at the Sunbeam Company and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny Luther Blume III of the home; a son, Tracy Neal Blume of Imperial Beach, Calif.; sisters, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Gibson of Blackville, Mrs. Elaine (Billy) Whetstone of Cope; grandchildren, Alicia Nicole Blume, Yesenia Celeste Blume, Bryan Anthony Blume; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Nathan Roy Martin, Frank Kneece Martin; and a brother-in-law, Henry Phillip Gibson.

James Arthur Creech (Summerville)

Henry Arthur Creech, 86, of Summerville, died Sunday, December 17, 2017.

His funeral service will be held Thursday, December 21, 2017 in Deer Park Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Barnwell County Memory Gardens (2624 Reynolds Road) at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Arthur was born November 6, 1931 in Allendale County, the son of the late Lide Creech and Aggie Padgett Creech. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and retired as a Nuclear Reactor Operator with Savannah River Plant. Arthur was a former member and deacon of Calvary Baptist Church in Barnwell, and is a current member of Deer Park Baptist Church. He provided guitar ministry for many years in area nursing homes.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Crowder Parker Creech of Summerville; three sons: Arthur Glenn Creech (Pam) of New Orleans, La., Greggory Dean Creech of Aiken, Bryan Clyde Creech (Dominique) of Hilton Head; daughter, Dawn Willette Johnson (Clay) of Knoxville, Tenn.; stepson, Brian Parker of Lulu, Ga.; stepdaughter, Bridget Sellars of Summerville, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was widower of Doll Harrison Creech.

Capt. Benjamin Bernard Fowke, USN (Ret.)

VIRGINIA BEACH – Capt. Benjamin Bernard Fowke, USN (Ret.), 93, passed away December 12, 2017.

Born in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Walter Bernard Fowke and Myrtle Bennett Fowke of the Boiling Springs community of Barnwell County.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sara Johnston Fowke, born and raised in Kline; son, Benjamin B. Fowke Jr., of Ormond Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Betsy L. Lindquist (Dan) of Ormond Beach, Fla. and Joanie F. Newhart (Khosrow Matini, MD) of Mt. Vernon, Va.; three grandchildren, David Miller Jr. (Carmen), Miranda Fowke, and Michael Fowke; and a great-grandson, Edwin Martinez. He is also survived by nieces, Lynda Bechtold, Gale Sullivan, Angela Graham, Linda Fowke, and Holly Rimes; two nephews, Jay Hoyt Thompson and Philip McHugh; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and many beloved cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Fowke, and two grandsons, Joe Tennant and Nicholas Fowke.

He served for 33 years as a naval aviator, participating in the end of World War II, the Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. He flew in carrier squadrons on both coasts, plus Italy and Japan. In the Korean conflict, he served in the Navy’s first night attack all weather squadron. He served on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Naval History Center in Washington, D.C. He served on numerous ships, including the Boxer, the Coral Sea, the Bennington, and made carrier landings on numerous other carriers. He was most proud of his assignment to Test Pilot Training School and subsequent tour as a test pilot at Patuxent River, Md.; and his tour as Commanding Officer of VRC-50, a large carrier transport squadron in Japan. He graduated from Barnwell High School, Wofford College, Auburn University, Naval Justice School, Naval War College, and Air War College. He retired with the rank of Captain.

Funeral services will be held at the Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church in Boiling Springs on December 28, 2017 at 2 p.m. with graveside services following at the Fowke Family Cemetery. Karen passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2017.

Born in Waco, Texas, Karen was the daughter of the late Daniel Clinton Kennedy and Eva Nell Sewell Kennedy Stevenson and was married to the late Jon Terry. She was a graduate of Williston-Elko High School, earned an Associate Degree from Aiken Technical College in Accounting and was a homemaker. Karen enjoyed spending time at Edisto Beach.

Survivors include her daughter, Sara Terry of Blackville; her fiancé, James “Moochie” Gerber; step father, Lewis Franklin Stevenson and a dear friend, Linda Stockman, all of Williston.

Delores Creech Fail (Barnwell)

A graveside funeral service for Delores Creech McDonald Fail, 88, of Barnwell, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Kyle Hardin officiating. Delores passed away Wednesday, December 27, 2017.

Born in Barnwell, she was a daughter of the late John Floyd Creech and Giulia Still Creech. She retired from the Barnwell School District #45, was a member of the Eastern Star, the Gideon’s International and Friendship Baptist Church. She was a devoted minister’s wife to her first husband, the late Reverend Kenneth McDonald, and was the widow of Sidney Fail. Aunt Delores was well known for her delicious fig preserves. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Delores’s devoted caregivers Regina Ashba and Tabitha Russell who took exceptional special care of her.

Surviving are her sister-in-law, Myrtle Creech; brother-in-law, Mike Roach and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth McDonald; a son, Hugh McDonald; baby girl, McDonald; her second husband, Sidney Fail; brothers, Fulmer (Alice) Creech and Reverend Wilbur Creech; and her sister, Jannie Creech Roach.

Dorothy Kathleen Blind (Fairfax)

Dorothy Kathleen Blind, 95, of Fairfax, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 after a short illness.

Mrs. Blind was born in 1922 in Dennison, Ohio. She was the daughter of the late Birney M. and Nellie Patterson Long. She was employed by the Agriculture office in Columbus, Ohio until she married Frank H. Blind in 1945 after he returned from the war. Kathleen and Frank moved to Allendale in 1952 where they chose to raise their family for 58 years. Kathleen devoted her life to her family. She was an active member of Swallow Savannah United Methodist Church until she moved to Columbia. Mrs. Blind was also a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, and her sister Marjorie Gary. She is survived by her children, Birney F. (Laura) Blind of Clinton, John A. (Janie) Blind of Colorado Springs, CO, Ruth Ann (Mike) Tuten of Crossville, TN, Stanley T. (Joy) Blind of Lexington; seven grandchildren: Bryan A. (Maren) Blind of Castle Rock, CO, Katy (Nick) Brant of Denver, CO, Tyler Blind of Mt. Pleasant, Lauren (Todd) Bontrager of Gastonia, NC, Melanie (Clay) Carter of Lexington, Jennifer (Barrett) Hansen of Staten Island, NY, Kenneth (Jenna) Blind of Chapin. She was "Grandma Cookie" to her ten great-grandchildren: Evelyn, Grant, Ella, Jack, Elijah, Rhett, Abigail, Christian, Caroline, Emma.

Family and friends will celebrate Kathleen's home going on Friday, January 5, 2018. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. with the service at 2:30 at Swallow Savannah UMC, 417 Walnut St. West, Allendale, SC.

Elaine Mae Rhoads MacDonald, 82, of Barnwell, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at her home. No formal services are planned at this time.

Born in Akron, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth Wayne Rhoads and Maybelle Rock Rhoads. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth MacDonald; grandchildren, Faith (Daniel) Jackson, Terry (Stephen) Renew, Tina Still, Jason MacDonald; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Leslie MacDonald and a brother, George Rhoads.

Marian F. Davis (Springfield)

Funeral services for Marian Fogle Davis, 89, of Springfield, will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2018 in the First Baptist Church of Springfield with the Reverends Jarrod Pemper and Henry Cooper officiating. Mrs. Marian passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.

Born in Neeses, Mrs. Marian was a daughter of the late Enoch Leroy Fogle and Emily Bell Fanning Fogle and was married to the late Thurman Jones Davis for 64 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Springfield, was a member of the Garden Club and was office manager for Talley Corbett Box Company for 25 years.

Survivors include her sons, Thurman Russell “Rusty” (Jody) Davis of Charleston, Mark Allen (Millie) Davis of Norway, Glen Fogle (Jennie) Davis of Barnwell; grandchildren, James Andrew (Angie) Bennett, Emily Bennett (Michael) Wise, Jordan Davis (Steve) Renna, Lindsay Davis (Brian) McManus, Jenni Davis (Todd) Wermers, Keri Camille Davis, Rebekah Davis (Jared) Thrasher, Andrew Britt (Amy) Davis, Mark Tyler (Brooke) Davis; great-grandchildren, Abby, Emma Kate, Vivian, Tennysen, Libby, Bennett, Davis, Cedar; sisters, Maxine (Paul) Owen, Christine (David) Bair, Jackie (Robert) Smith; brother, Kenneth (Lynn Iris) Fogle; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Thurman, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia Hope Bennett and a sister, Mary Livingston.

Robert Jacobs (Barnwell)

Mr. Robert Jacobs departed this life Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at his home.

Born on September 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Robert and Ellen Jacobs. At an early age he joined the Bethlehem Baptist Church and remained active until his illness.

Jacobs was a Navy veteran who devotedly served his country as a chef during World War II.

He was joined in matrimony to Virgie Jacobs who preceded him in death. To this union nine children were born. Three preceded him in death: Terrence, Ada, and Phyllis Jacobs.

He is survived by six children, including four daughters: Barbara (Joseph) Daniels of Aiken, Evelyn Jacobs Ford, Vanessa Jacobs, and Mary (Brooker) Simmons, all of Barnwell; and two sons, Gregory (Ethel) Jacobs of Barnwell, and Eddie Jacobs of Springfield. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law: Ann Jane Roundtree of Sumter, Ivory Roundtree of Jersey City, New Jersey, and Bernice Roundtree of Patterson, New Jersey; 25 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Homegoing service was held Friday, December 22, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Barnwell with Pastor Harold Shepherd officiating. His granddaughters served as flower bearers while his grandsons were pallbearers. Committal, benediction and invaultment followed at Hope Memorial Park on Yale Road in Barnwell.

Funeral services for Helen Black Hightower Shealy, 96, of Barnwell will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018 in the Mole Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rommie Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Reedy Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home, 9399 Patterson St., Barnwell, SC 29812.

Helen went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 2, 2018.

She was born on May 4, 1921 in Barnwell County and was a daughter of the late Milledge F. and Ellen M. Carter Black. She was a member of Ashleigh Baptist Church. She had worked for the Palm Beach Company, Barnwell County Hospital and was secretary of the Local Woodmen of the World (local camp).

She is survived by three sons, Ted F. (Connie) Hightower of Savannah, Ga., Rev. H. Dean (Bobbie) Hightower of La Grange, N.C., and R. Patrick (Eula) Hightower of West Columbia; sister, Lois Black Sanders of Barnwell; 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, H. E. Hightower and James C. Shealy; her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Blondell Black; and brother-in-law, Pat Sanders.

Annie Agnes 'Dolly' Short (Barnwell)

Annie Agnes “Dolly” Boyd Short, 98, of Barnwell, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, January 4, 2018.

Dolly was born on July 4, 1919 in Augusta, Georgia and was a daughter of the late Walton Saxon and Eva Bell Ferguson Boyd. She retired after 25 years from the Veterans Administration Canteen Service having worked in Augusta and Decatur, Georgia. She was a member of the Barnwell First Baptist Church. She was a member of The Young at Heart at First Baptist Church and the Busy Bees.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 2 p.m. in the Westover Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia with Rev. Billy Vaughn officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include her daughter, Eva Short Kimberly; sons, Ernest Harvey Short Jr. and Gary Patrick Short; three granddaughters, Sandra J. Kimberly, Eva Marie Kumpf and Laura Short; grandsons, Larry Short, Jonathan Short, Nicholas Short and Joseph Short; four great-grandchildren, Mollie Kumpf, Aiden Kumpf, Logan Kumpf and Sophia Short. She was predeceased by a son, Walton Alexander Short.

Arnold Anderson (Blackville)

Funeral services for Mr. Arnold Anderson of Blackville were held on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the Shrub Branch Baptist Church in Blackville where the Reverend McKinley Neal is the pastor and eulogist and Evangelist Gwendolyn Neal, presiding. Interment followed in the family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation was held from 12 noon until the hour of service.

Mr. Arnold Anderson, 72, was born on May 4, 1945 to the late Mr. John and Mrs. Fannie Williams Anderson in Brooklyn, N.Y.

At an early age he sought God’s divine guidance and joined the Shrub Branch Missionary Baptist Church in Blackville where he served faithfully on the Usher Ministry. He was educated at the Macedonia High School in Blackville. He was employed with Augusta Fiberglass and Dixie Narco.

“Arnold”, as he was affectionately known, will be remembered for the love he had for his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father John Anderson, his mother Fannie Anderson, and one sister Jessie Faust.

On Wednesday evening, December 27, 2017, Our Heavenly Father summoned him from labor to reward following an extended illness at his residence in Blackville.

Arnold leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted niece, Mrs. Jessie (Freddie) Glover of the home; two brothers: Mr. Calvin Brown of Blackville and Mr. Arthur Anderson of Florida; also included are his nieces, Kenita Anderson of Boston, MA, and April Faust of Blackville; nephew, Derik Anderson of Boston, MA; special cousin, Ms. Dorothy Mayes of Blackville, and a host of additional cousins, other relatives, and sympathizing friends.

Jamie Lee (Barnwell)

Home Going celebration for Mr. Jamie Lee of Barnwell was held on Saturday afternoon, December 30, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the Main Street Church of Christ in Williston where Brother Dennis Pernell is pastor and officiating. Interment followed in the Blackville Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Friday December 29, 2017 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.

Mr. Jamie Lee, 45, was born on September 8, 1972 to Mrs. Shirley Ann Lee Hunter and the late Mr. Herbert Hicks in Bamberg County.

He was educated at Blackville-Hilda High School and graduated from the Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School of Bamberg. He furthered his education at Voorhees College in Denmark. Jamie was baptized into Christ at the Main Street Church of Christ in Williston.

Jamie was preceded in death by his sister, Vickie Arlene Lee.

“Joc Box”, as he was affectionately known, will be remembered as a caring person deeply devoted to his family. His memory will forever live in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him.

On Thursday morning, December 21, 2017, Mr. Jamie Lee made his final transition from this life into eternity at the Aiken Regional Medical Center of Aiken.

His life’s legacy will continue to live on through his devoted family including: his loving mother, Mrs. Shirley Ann Lee Hunter of Williston; two sisters: Ms. Tonya Lee Hartwell and Ms. Annissa Lee, both of Columbia; four brothers: Mr. Alexander Lee of Lithonia, Ga., Mr. Maurice (Tashena) Hunter of Columbia, Mr. Darrell Hunter of Kershaw County, and Mr. Herbert Hicks Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; a host of aunts and uncles, including one special aunt, Mrs. Jessie M. The Home Going Celebration for Mr. Perstine Riley Jr. will be conducted on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 3 p.m. at Capernaum Missionary Baptist Church, 5264 Capernaum Rd., Denmark, SC 29042, with Reverend Allan C. Keitt, Pastor and Reverend Dr. Alton L. Taylor Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Capernaum Missionary Baptist Church Old Cemetery. Visitation was on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 12 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, January 14, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home.

A Graveside Funeral Service for Doris Faye Coffey Blackwell, 85, of Williston, was held 2 o’clock p.m., Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the Williston Cemetery with the Reverend Dan Fogle officiating.

Faye passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018.

Born in Fyffe, Alabama, she was a daughter of the late Buster Taft Coffey and Brunell Graves Coffey and was married to the late L Q Blackwell. She was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Faye was a loving wife and mother.

Survivors include her daughters, Regina B. Dyches of Chapin, Katrina B. Boulware and her husband Herbert Mease of West Columbia and Doris Michelle Blackwell of Columbia; a sister, Peggy (Kenneth) Bailey of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren, Jennifer (Craig) Livingston, Melissa (Joe) Furtick, Brent (Barbara) Boulware; and six great-grandchildren.

Mary Drayton “Dray” Robertson Meyer, age 74, of Barton, and the widow of the late Ralph “Jackie” Meyer died Wednesday, January 10, 2018.

Mrs. Meyer was a born in Ridgeland and a daughter of the late William Madison and Flossie Hamilton Robertson. She was a hairdresser having worked at Nor-Lena’s Hair Stylist for many years, was a member of Fairfax Chapter #65 O.E.S. and a member of Brunson Christian Church. Dray was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Graveside funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Hamilton Cemetery, Hampton, with the Rev. Mike Reed officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.

Survivors include two sons, Jacky Meyer (Angela) and Bucky Meyer (Kim); three grandchildren, Caroline Meyer, William Meyer and Savannah Meyer; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle W. Meyer and Audrey M. Meredith (Terry); and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, William F. Robertson and two sisters, Caribel R. Sullivan and Elizabeth “Betty” R. Gray Copeland.

Dorothy Cheek Still, 92, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018 in Retreat Doctors Hospital in Richmond, Va.

Mrs. Still was born on April 1, 1925 in Barnwell and was a daughter of the late Randolph and Mattie Cheek. She was a retired employee of the Bell South Company. She was attended Saint Andrews Catholic Church of Barnwell. She was a loving and devoted mother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Saint Andrew Catholic Church with burial in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery at the airport. Visitation will be on Thursday evening from 6-8 pm at Mole Funeral Home.

Survivors include her son, Myron Still of Richmond, Va.; her sister, Irma C. Moore of Barnwell; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased also by her brother, Lloyd Cheek.

Graveside services for Mrs. Cleo Youngblood Cox, 78, wife of Donnie Cox, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 11, 2018 in the Barnwell County Memorial Cemetery at the Airport on Hwy. 278, Barnwell.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Walterboro where she was a member of the Miriam Clark Sunday School Class. She was also very active in missions work.
Surviving besides her husband are three daughters, Karen Wyndham and Kelly Ann Cox and Tara Christine Bazzle of Walterboro and Barbara Ellen Scher of Merrillville, Indiana; sister, Sarah Moon of Aukland, Mo.; half-sister, Juanita Berhl of Big Sandy, Tenn.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, James Edward Cox.
