Earley Walker McCladdie - Graniteville

Mr. Earley Walker McCladdie, age 70, was born in Appling, Ga. on October 23, 1946 to the late Willie and Mattie Mae Hawes.

Earley received his education at Blachard High School in Appling, Ga. He worked and retired from the U.S. Forest Service after many years of service. He was a great master mechanic. He built and crank his engines on his kitchen table, and loved to race cars where he won more than he ever lost.

Earley was a loving and kind person, and will be remembered for the love he had for his family and friends.

He was married to Gertrude McCladdie for 32 years.

Besides his grandparents and parents, three brothers-in-law preceded him in death.                                                                                                                                          

On Thursday, November 17, 2016, our Heavenly Father called him from labor to reward at his home in Graniteville.

Earley leaves to cherish his memory, four sons, Mitchell (Shelia) McCladdie of Evans, Ga., Kenny Brooks of Augusta, Ga., Gerald McCladdie (Tyiesha) of Long Beach, CA, and Germaine McCladdie of Los Angeles, CA; three daughters, Shirley (Curtis) Redman of Atlanta, Ga., Bridget (Forell) Brown of Graniteville, and Cortney Dunn of Martinez, Ga.; nineteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three brothers, Horace (Evelyn) McCladdie of Augusta, Ga., K. C. (Corine) McCladdie of Harlem, Ga., and Joe McCladdie of Evans, Ga.; one sister, Beatrice Knight of Stamford, CT;  one sister-in-law, Delois Leverett; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and sympathizing friends.

The funeral service was held 2 p.m. Sunday, November 27, 2016 at the Morris Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Barnwell with words of comfort by Rev. Glenn Orr. The burial followed in the church cemetery.

A memorial service for Devin Still, 31, will be held on December 3, 2016 at New Testament Baptist Church (41 Starlight Lane, Barnwell) with Rev. Daniel Renew officiating.

Devin was born on January 29, 1985 at Aiken Regional Medical Center to parents Randall and Pam Still. He was residing at Miracle Hill Ministries Overcomers Center in Greenville. He entered into eternal rest on September 10, 2016 in Greer.

He is survived by his soul mate, Kami Augustine; parents, Randall and Pam Still; siblings, Sunny Still (sister), Joshua Felty and Adrian Felty (brothers); children, Alexander (son) and Alyiviah (daughter); grandparents, Myrtle and Wesley Cling; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his other grandparents, Myrl and Ulysses Still.

Betty Ray Everett - Hilda

Betty Ray Everett, of Hilda, passed away on November 28, 2016 in Augusta, Ga.

The family will be pleased to receive guests at Mole Funeral Home, 9399 Patterson Street, Barnwell, on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at Salem United Methodist Church in Hilda on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. with Dr. Stephen Burnette and Reverend Patricia Dangerfield officiating. Burial will follow at the Salem United Methodist Church cemetery.

Betty was born in Olar to William “Bud” and Mildred Ray on January 13, 1935. She went to high school at Denmark-Olar and graduated in 1952. Betty worked and lived in many parts of the U.S. and had many remarkable accomplishments including being the first female member of the GA Fire Chiefs Association. She was very interested in agriculture and operated a commercial greenhouse business. She worked for the Ness Motley Law Firm as the Payroll Administrator for many years and retired as the Hilda Town Clerk in 2015. Betty was an active member of Salem United Methodist Church and involved in many community activities. She loved to cook and entertain and was well known for her generosity to others.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth and her brother John “Bubba” Ray. She is survived by four sisters, Sally Ann Weeks of Hilda, Martha Creech of Blackville, Virginia Morris of Hilda, and Julia Hunter of Olar. She is also survived by three brothers, Pat Ray of Barnwell; Shannon Ray of Govan; and Harry Ray of Hilda. Betty continues to be survived by her daughter, Beth Fenn of Barnwell; son, Jacque Ussery of Blackville; grandchildren, Perry Everett, Ken Everett, Heather Pace, Katie Waers, and Jason Ussery and her six great-grandchildren.

Amaryllis Newsome Tyler - Brunson

Amaryllis Newsome Tyler, 89, wife of James Wendell Tyler, died Thursday, November 24, 2016.

Mrs. Tyler was a native of Washington, Georgia and was the daughter of the late Robert Boyce Newsome and Henrietta Combs Newsome. She attended the Brunson School, and was a graduate of both Winthrop College and The University of South Carolina.

Amaryllis touched many lives in Allendale County, and beyond, having worked with Social Services and later as an educator. A lifelong member of the Brunson United Methodist Church, she served as pianist for 53 years, Music Director, Church Historian, and also served her church faithfully on numerous other committees.

Graveside funeral services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Brunson Cemetery with the Reverend Kenneth B. Timmerman and the Reverend Doctor James F. Norris III officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Brunson United Methodist Church prior to the service.

Survivors include her husband, James Wendell Tyler; two daughters, Jennifer Randall (Dan), Vickers Harrelson; four grandchildren, Jessica Randall, E.C. Harrelson, Robert Harrelson, and Rebecca Branden (Grant); one sister, Lillian N. Sherman; one sister-in-law, Cilla Newsome; two brothers-in-law, William B. Oswald and Davie L. Tyler, and one great-granddaughter, Mira Branden; numerous nieces and nephews; and caregivers and special friends of the family, Catherine Harris and Bobbie Lee. She was pre-deceased by brothers, Robert B. Newsome Jr., and William E. Newsome; and sisters, Evelyn H. Newsome and Anne N. Oswald.

A memorial service for Charles Kenneth “Ken” Whitaker, 72, of North Augusta, will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2016 in the Folk Funeral Home Chapel, Williston, with Dr. Thomas Terry officiating; military honors will be accorded. Born in Rutherfordton, NC he was the son of the late Charlie Martin Whitaker and Lillie Jackson Whitaker Dolin. Ken worked as a nuclear engineer and was self-employed, having owned and operated several construction and manufacturing companies, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Survivors include his loving companion, Charlotte “Cookie” Fore; sons, Brian (Erin) Whitaker of Greenwood, Scott (Shanna) Whitaker of Anderson; grandsons, Spear, Mason and Caden; granddaughters, Delaynie and Bree and another granddaughter expected soon. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Trudy Whitaker.

Dr. Bruce A. Carey - Williston

Dr. Bruce A. Carey went to be with the Lord on November 30, 2016.

He was born June 3, 1949 to the late H. W. Carey and Coleen Carey in Zanesville, Ohio. He graduated from the College of Optometry at The Ohio State University in 1975. After which, he and his wife, Judy, moved to Williston where he practiced optometry for 41 years in Williston and Hampton.

Bruce enjoyed life to the fullest playing golf, watching all sports, and was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan, esp. football. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. As a member of Williston United Methodist Church, he served as Sunday School Superintendent.

Bruce is survived by his wife of 45 years, Judy Gruber Carey; his son, Shawn (Mary) Carey of Aiken, and daughter Sara (Matt) Howard of Lake Wylie; grandchildren, Noah Carey, Caroline Carey and Alden Howard.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Williston United Methodist Church with visitation in the social hall after the service. Memorials may be made to Williston United Methodist Church, 6030 Springfield Road, Williston, SC 29853.

Mr. James Milligan Jr., 88, of 830 Main Street, Barnwell, died on November 28, 2016 at Aiken Regional Medical Center.

He was the son of the late James Milligan Sr. and Carrie Huggins Milligan.

Funeral service will be held on December 3, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Blackville with Rev. John D. Holston officiating. Interment will follow at New Home Baptist Church Cemetery in Barnwell.

Survivors include his devoted and loving wife of 49 years, Elizabeth Odom Milligan of Barnwell; one step son, Freddie (Dianne) Odom of Williston: step grandchildren, Frederick Jerod Odom of Charlotte, NC, Brian Anthony (Danielle) Odom of Columbia; and three step great-grandchildren, Briana, Aiden and Jaden Odom; three sisters-in-law, Gloria (Leon) Thornton of LaGrange, Ga., Doris (Lonnie) Hosey of Barnwell and Doris (Tyrone) McClain of Barnwell; one brother-in-law, Earnest Williams of Barnwell; a special niece and nephew; Jean Milligan (Clifford) Gadson of Atlanta, Ga. and Jacob (Jake) Milligan of Statesboro, Ga. and a host of other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Gerald Grubbs, 69, of Barnwell, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Faith Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Blackville, with the Reverend Rick Powell officiating. Gerald passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2016.

Born in Barnwell County, he was a son of the late Dillon Grubbs and Ana Lou Baxley and was formerly married to Pearline Grubbs. He previously worked at Shuron, J. P. Stevenson and Whitlock Combing before retiring from Hardee’s in Allendale. He enjoyed mechanic work, gardening and playing the guitar.

Johnny Dean Gatlin - Olar

Johnny Dean Gatlin, 54, passed away December 3, 2016 in Olar.

He was born on December 21, 1961 in Bamberg. He is the son of Lorraine Still Gatlin and the late Jahue Gatlin Jr. He was retired from Augusta Fiberglass.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, December 8, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the Mt. Lebanon Christian Church Cemetery with Rev. Farrell Ray officiating. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Mt. Lebanon Christian Church, P.O. Box 242, Barnwell, SC 29812.

He is survived by his mother and his faithful companion Jake. He was predeceased by his father and a brother, Tony Gatlin.

Joe Anderson Sr. - Barnwell

On Friday, November 18, 2016, Mr. Joe Anderson Sr. departed this life at Pruitt Health of Barnwell.

Joe Anderson Sr. was born on September 5, 1944 to Lillie Hay and Willie Anderson.

Joe worked at Barnwell Highway Department and retired from there. In 1963 he married Caroline Mixon. To this union three sons were born. He is preceded in death by one son, Joe Anderson Jr.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories, his wife, Caroline Anderson; two children, Ozzie (Joyce) Anderson of Barnwell, Bobby Sr. (Janice) Anderson of Williston; one sister, Lillie Mae Dorch of Barnwell; two sisters-in-law, Pauline (Paul) Brown and Carrie Mae (Robert) Williams of Barnwell; grandchildren, Latoya Anderson of Allendale, Ozzie (Niki) Anderson Jr. of Virginia, Sabrina (Senny) Pots of Barnwell, Janel and Whitney Sapp of Barnwell, Bobby Anderson Jr. of Barnwell and Maurice (Tylisha) Williams of Williston; 14 great-grandchildren, step grand and great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral service was held November 23, 2016 at 3 p.m. at Lebby Funeral Home in Barnwell. Interment followed at Mount Mariah Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cynthia Denise Tooks - Barnwell

Cynthia Denise Tooks, aka “Judy”, age 50, of Barnwell, was born on October 9, 1966 in Long Beach, New York to the late Doris Mack Tooks. Our Heavenly Father called her home on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at the Aiken Regional Medical Center in Aiken.

Cynthia was reared in the love and admiration of her late grandmother, Lou Ella Mack, to always love and trust in God.

At an early age, she sought God’s direction and guidance and joined New Home Baptist Church in Barnwell.

Cynthia graduated from Barnwell High School in 1985 in Barnwell. She returned back to New York for several years then decided to return back to Barnwell. She worked in the nursing field where her heart was until she was diagnosed with cancer and was no longer capable to perform her daily job tasks.

“Judy”, as she was affectionately called by her family and friends, will be best remembered for the love she had for her daughter, family and friends.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Tooks.

Cynthia leaves to cherish her memory a loving, sweet daughter, whom she loved more than anything or anyone in this world, Kelechi Tooks of Denmark; three sisters, Janice (Kitty) Mack and Michelle Tooks, both of Barnwell, and Alfreda Tooks of Williston; two aunts, Mildred Mack Harris of Denmark and Elizabeth Johnson of Blackville; two uncles, Jerry (Geneva) Mack of Barnwell and Dave (Louise) Mack of Denmark; a special friend, Danny “Champ” Jenkins of Barnwell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and sympathizing friends.

A Celebration of Life service was held Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 1 p.m. at New Home Baptist Church in Barnwell with Rev. Harris T. Barker officiating. Interment followed at New Home Baptist Church Cemetery in Barnwell.

Joyce Stillinger Brown - Salley

Joyce passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2016.

Born in Aiken County, she was a daughter of the late William T. “Skinny” Stillinger and Pansy Jeffcoat Stillinger and was the widow of Bernard Brown. Joyce was a graduate of Salley High School and was a member of Berlin Baptist Church. She formerly worked at Kent’s Korner and the Kwik Karry in Wagener and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her son, Allen (Kala) Brown of Pelion; a daughter, Lisa Brown (Daniel Frazier) of Salley; a brother, William T. “Bo” (Letitia) Stillinger of Williston; grandchildren, Kyle, Preston and Trevor Hair, Lane, Levi and Laci Brown and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Flora Lee joined her family and loved ones for her heavenly reunion on December 9, 2016.

Born in Barnwell County, she was a daughter of the late James Guy Still and Louise Ward Still and was the widow of Sam Jeter Hutto. Mrs. Flora Lee was a devoted member of Hilda Southern Methodist Church, previously worked as a bookkeeper for Hutto Brother’s Welding Service in Hilda and was always involved with community events and fundraisers. She enjoyed playing the guitar and the dulcimer, loved gardening and making a variety of crafts. She enjoyed restoring antiques, spoiling her animals and always loved family gatherings.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Sammie James and Ronnie Wesley Hutto; sisters, Dora Lee Still, Florence Redmond and a brother, David Still.

Graveside funeral service for Nancy Cooper Milliken, 73 of Murrells Inlet, formerly of Springfield, will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the Salley Oakview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Folk Funeral Home, Williston.

Nancy passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2016.

Born in Orangeburg County, she was a daughter of the late Julian Jackson “Jule” Cooper and Joyce Rutland Cooper.

Survivors include her sons, Troy Cooper of Murrells Inlet, Roy (Brooke) Ross of Conway; grandchildren, Lindsay, Kaylie Cooper, Jonathon Dick, Davis Cooper, Bryce and Lily Ross; brothers, Michael (Linda) Cooper of Sawyerdale, Robert (Helen) Cooper of Williston. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Stephen Ross.

A family graveside service for Margaret Ruth Pettigrew Robertson, 87, of Denmark was held 10 a.m. Monday, December 12, 2016 at the Eastview Cemetery, Edgefield. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, December 12, 2016 at the Denmark First Baptist Church with the Reverends Matt Thomas and Andy Hunter officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Memorial contributions may be given in Mrs. Robertson’s memory to the First Baptist Church of Denmark, P.O. Mrs. Robertson passed away on Friday, December 9, 2016.

Born in Edgefield, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Grady Pettigrew and Lucille Reel Pettigrew. She graduated from Winthrop University with a degree in Education; she taught school in North Carolina and South Carolina; was a homemaker and a loving wife and mother. She was a faithful member of the Denmark First Baptist Church where she was involved in the Women on Mission and was a Sunday School teacher. She was an avid reader and volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program. She served as secretary for the Barnwell-Bamberg Baptist Association while her husband, Reverend Ted Robertson was the Director of Missions for 15 years.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 61 years, Reverend James Ted Robertson Sr.; a daughter, Sarah R. (Tom) Timm of Summerville; sons, James T. Robertson Jr. of Charleston, Samuel Reel (Juli) Robertson of Spartanburg, Warren Calhoun (Cathy) Robertson Sr. of Shelby, NC; grandchildren, Joshua (Peg) Timm, Elisabeth (Justin) Hofflinger, Leah (Phil) Varner, Joanna (Josh) Tew, Lucy Robertson, Harris Robertson, Christin Robertson, Warren Robertson Jr., Samuel Robertson; great-grandchildren, Karis Timm, Caleb Timm, Sadie Tew, Grady Tew, MariLea Varner and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jewel P. Burckhalter and a brother, John Wallace Pettigrew.
